Life Hack Monday: Habit Stack!

I have found the secret to unparalleled productivity, confidence and happiness. 

 

But before I tell you my secret I need you to think of how your life would change if you were able to integrate 3-5 new, positive habits into your life?  And that's just for starters - after those were solidly part of your routine, you could continue to add more positive habits into infinity!

 

What habits would you choose?

 

Here are a few ideas to get you thinking:

  • a green smoothie for breakfast

  • deep full body stretching

  • twice daily meditation

  • working out

  • learning a new language 

  • writing thank you notes

  • reading an inspirational book or blog (or something just for fun!)

Here is the secret: after you know what positive habits you want in your life, attach them to something you are already doing = Habit Stacking! 

 

For example, my desired habit was stretching.  Every morning while I wait for the coffee to brew - I stretch.  I do not miss a morning.  The habit/event I already do is make coffee, I attach stretching to that habit.

 

Another example.  When I fold laundry, I do my face exercises.  I fold 3 items, do 3 face exercises.  Folding laundry is the established habit/event and I attach face exercises to it.

 

Driving in the car is an existing habit/event that has great potential for attaching a new habit to.  It has to be something you can do safely in the car of course, but that includes so many things such as: learning a new language, listening to a book, talking with loved ones, reciting affirmations and more!

 

Decide what 3 habits would most enrich your life right now and think about your existing habits/events that you can attach them to.   I have an ongoing list of new positive habits I can't wait to 'install' into my daily life.  

 

Before I discovered this technique it was frustrating for me to attempt to add new habits.  I was rarely successful or maybe for a short time but then I would just stop doing the new habit.  Since I have been Habit Stacking I have had a 90% success rate with new habits becoming old hat.
