How well do YOU know Mother's Day?

Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood, that is observed worldwide.   In the U.S. Mother’s Day is observed this year on Sunday May 13th.

The American version of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914.   Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar.

Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele.  The early Christian’s held an annual festival known as “Mothering Sunday.”

Interesting (and disturbing…) Mother’s Day Facts:

  • Mother’s Day accounts for 25% of all flowers purchased in a year – this is a wise gift, since studies show that giving a bouquet of flowers results in a multitude of positive physical and psychological benefits

  • In 90% of all world languages, the word for “Mother” begins with a “M”

  • In the United States alone, around 122 million phone calls are made to moms on Mother’s Day. I do not have the statistics for the number of texts…

  • Approximately $14 billion dollars are spent on Mother’s Day

  • Youngest mother: in 1939 in Peru a 5 year old gave birth to a baby boy

  • Oldest mother: in 2003 in India a 65 year old woman gave birth to a baby boy

  • Largest time frame between children: in the United States a woman had her first child (a daughter) in 1956 and second child (a son) in 1997 – 41 years and 185 days later

Mother’s are very special.  If yours is still in this world let her know you love her – she needs to know!  And if like me, your mother has crossed to another world, STILL let her know you love her – she needs to know.

Parenting is something no one is perfect at.  We all just do the best we can in the circumstances we find ourselves. NOTE: if you have chosen not to be a parent that is the MOST DIFFICULT decision a woman can ever be asked to make - know that you have made the best decision for everyone, unselfishly never looking back.

Sunday is a day of LOVE – make it your personal mission to be an Agent of Love, if even for just that one day.

Xoxo Katherine
