New Feature! Inspiring Woman Wednesday. Several Wednesdays a month I will introduce you to a different inspiring woman. If you have women you would like me to feature, please let me know via my contact page .
Our first Inspiring Woman is Tao Porchon-Lynch. I initially became aware of this 99 year old yoga instructor when I was looking for workout tights in my Athleta catalog. Tao was one of the women featured in the Athleta "Power of She" initiative.
Tao Porchon was born in August 1918. Her father was from France, her mother a native Indian. Tao was born on a ship in the middle of the English Channel - her mother died during the birth.
Porchon was raised by her aunt and uncle. Her uncle designed railroads and often brought her on trips, travelling all around Asia. The family also owned a strip of vineyards in the wine region of the Rhône River Valley, located in Southern France.
Tao started practicing yoga at age nine, although she did not get involved in it professionally until much later in her life. As a young woman, Porchon met the Indian nationalist Mahatma Gandhi, who was her uncle's close acquaintance and marched with him on two separate occasions. She also participated in demonstrations with General Charles de Gaulle and Martin Luther King, Jr.
Now 99 years old, Tao has been getting up at 5 am for over 76 years to teach yoga. She still teaches six to eight classes a week in New York. In addition Tao leads programs across the globe and appeared on Season 10 of America's Got Talent.
Tao has written two books. First her autobiography: Dancing Light: The Spiritual Side of Being Through the Eyes of a Modern Yoga Master, and just last year, Shining Bright: Quotes and Images to Inspire Optimism, Gratitude and Belief in Your Limitless Potential.
If that's not enough and you aren't feeling like a total underachiever yet - Tao has been a couture model, actress, film producer, international film distributor, television executive, publisher and a co-founder of the American Wine Society.
Her mantra is: There Is Nothing You Cannot Do. Anything is possible, nothing is impossible.
'When you wake up every morning say "this is going to be the best day of my life" and it will be.'
I LOVE this woman and all of her spunk! You GO Tao! xoxo Katherine
